Who holds your data

What we collect, and why

Only what the thing you are using needs:

• An account is your email address and nothing else. It exists so we can send you the link to your entry and so you can sign back in.
• An entry is the photograph, its title, the one line you write about where and when it was taken, the name you want credited, and your country. Camstrap needs the name and the country to announce a result and to post a prize.
• A photograph carries its own EXIF. We read the capture time and the camera model from it, to check the picture was taken inside the competition window. We do not read or store GPS coordinates.
• Consents are stored as timestamps: when you confirmed the photograph is yours, and when you granted permission to show it. That record is what makes the permission real, and it cannot be altered afterwards, including by us.
• A vote is which finalist you voted for and on which day, so the one-a-day limit can be enforced.
• Lumière's planning tool stores the places and dates you ask about, so a report can be shown to you again without being recomputed.

Why we are allowed to

Entering is a contract: you give us an entry, we run a competition and can announce who won, so we process what an entry needs on that basis. The newsletter is consent, and consent alone. Analytics and the security of the site are our legitimate interest in knowing whether the site works and in stopping abuse. Nothing here is sold, and nothing here is used to advertise to you individually.

Who sees what

Judging is blind. The judge sees the photograph, its title and the line about where and when. She does not see your name, your email address or your country. Moderators do see those, because a human has to be able to tell that a photograph is somebody's own work. Approved entries appear in the public gallery with the name you asked to be credited under, and no other detail.

The other companies involved

We use as few as we can and none of them are paid with your data:

• Supabase hosts the database, the accounts and the photographs.
• Vercel serves the site.
• Resend sends the emails about your entry.
• Google Analytics and Google Tag Manager measure how the site is used.
• The Meta pixel measures whether an advert brought someone here. It is the only one that also belongs to an advertising company, and it is why the analytics above are described as a legitimate interest rather than something you asked for.

How long we keep it

An entry and its photograph are kept for the edition it was entered in and for two years afterwards, because the top twelve grant Camstrap two years of marketing permission and the record has to outlast the permission. An account is kept until you ask us to delete it. Newsletter consent is kept until you unsubscribe, which every newsletter carries a link for. Analytics data follows the retention Google and Meta apply by default.

What you can ask for

A copy of everything we hold about you, a correction, a deletion, or that we stop. You can withdraw the newsletter consent at any time without affecting your entry, and you can ask for an entry to be taken down, before or after the closing date. One email to benjamin@cam-strap.com does any of these, and we answer within a month. If we handle it badly you can complain to the CNIL, France's data protection regulator, at cnil.fr.

Age

The award is open to people aged 18 or over, and you confirm that when you enter. We do not knowingly collect anything from anyone younger. If you believe we have, write to us and we will delete it.

Changes

If this policy changes in a way that affects an entry already submitted, we will email everyone who has entered rather than quietly updating the page.
